Not all ingredients are created equal. While most food and supplement ingredients are safe, a growing body of research has raised concerns about certain additives commonly found in processed products. Here are the red flags to watch for.

Artificial Colors

Red 40 (Allura Red)

Also: Red 40 Lake, FD&C Red No. 40

The most widely used food dye in the US. Studies have linked it to hyperactivity in children. Banned or requires warning labels in several European countries.

Yellow 5 (Tartrazine) & Yellow 6 (Sunset Yellow)

Also: FD&C Yellow No. 5, FD&C Yellow No. 6

Common in candy, beverages, and cereals. Associated with allergic reactions and behavioral effects in sensitive individuals.

Blue 1 (Brilliant Blue)

Also: FD&C Blue No. 1

Used in candy, beverages, and ice cream. Some studies suggest it may cross the blood-brain barrier.

Preservatives

BHA & BHT

Butylated hydroxyanisole & Butylated hydroxytoluene

Synthetic antioxidants used to prevent fats from going rancid. BHA is classified as "reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen" by the US National Toxicology Program.

Sodium Benzoate & Potassium Sorbate

E211 & E202

Common preservatives. Sodium benzoate can form benzene (a known carcinogen) when combined with vitamin C (ascorbic acid) in acidic beverages.

Potassium Bromate

Also: bromated flour

Used in bread and baked goods. Classified as a possible carcinogen. Banned in the EU, Canada, and China but still permitted in the US.

Artificial Sweeteners

Aspartame

Also: NutraSweet, Equal

One of the most studied food additives. WHO classified it as "possibly carcinogenic to humans" in 2023. Common in diet sodas, sugar-free gum, and low-calorie products.

Sucralose

Also: Splenda

600x sweeter than sugar. Recent research suggests it may affect gut bacteria and glucose metabolism.

Acesulfame Potassium (Ace-K)

Also: Acesulfame K, E950

Often combined with other sweeteners. Some researchers have raised concerns about its breakdown products.

Risky Oils

Seed Oils

Soybean oil, canola oil, cottonseed oil, corn oil, sunflower oil

Highly processed industrial seed oils that are high in omega-6 fatty acids. Excessive omega-6 consumption is associated with inflammation. These oils dominate ultra-processed foods.

Partially Hydrogenated Oils

Also: trans fats

Artificially created fats. FDA banned artificial trans fats in 2018, but trace amounts still appear in some products.

Palm Kernel Oil

Different from palm oil

High in saturated fat. Also associated with deforestation and environmental concerns.

Other Controversial Additives

Carrageenan

E407

Seaweed extract used as a thickener. Studies suggest it may cause gut inflammation. Some organic food brands have removed it voluntarily.

MSG (Monosodium Glutamate)

E621, also: "natural flavors" can contain glutamate

Flavor enhancer. While generally recognized as safe by the FDA, some people report sensitivity symptoms (headaches, flushing).
